Amanda, who is a 21-year-old professional ballet dancer with Columbia City Ballet. She started dancing when she was 3 years old at local YMCA. She told us when she first fell in love with ballet, “My parents put me in dance class and I soon grew to love it, especially ballet. I liked the repetition and discipline that ballet demanded, as well as using the music to guide each move. When I was 7, I switched to a more professional ballet school and by high school I was dancing full time in a training program in New York City which required me to switch to online school.”
“Ballet has brought so much to my life. While it can be extremely draining physically and mentally, the fecling of being on stage is like no other.”
Amanda shared her story of dancing, “My most difficult moment was probably when I graduated my training program. The schooling was very hard and I felt like I lost my love of ballet. I was in a bad headspace, gained a lot of weight, and didn’t want to look at myself in the mirror. I continued on to a trainee program which is basically an internship with a ballet company. I spent a year there, but I still felt unmotivated and uninspired. I felt that none of my teachers believed in me and in turn, I didn’t believe in myself. The following summer I went to anew program. They taught in a different style and I saw a big improvement in my dancing which made me excited again. I was asked to join their trainee program and I did it without hesitation. I adopted a cat, switched to eating plant based, and started taking care of my mental health. After one year in their program, I received my first professional paid contract and have been loving ballet ever since. ”
Ballet Has Brought So Much to My Life
“Ballet has brought so much to my life. While it can be extremely draining physically and mentally, the feeling of being on stag is like no other. As soon as the lights go on and you are in your costume, it’s like being transported into another world where anything is possible, almost like magic. As a introvert, ballet allows me to express myself and tell stories without ever having to say a word. My biggest inspirations are my friends, some coworkers in my company and some who I grew up dancing with. When I watch them, I can feel what the audience feels and it makes me want to deliver that same effect.” in New York City which required me to switch to online school.”
