Ever since I moved back to Canada (after a very long time abroad!), I’ve been noticing how advanced the Canadian and American fashion industries are when it comes to sustainable and eco-conscious fashion. That, coupled with the financial crisis that was (and still is!) happening in Lebanon, and that nasty COVID-19 bug that took over the world, made me basically re-think my shopping habits as a whole.
We can all agree that we now shop less and we’re beginning to become more conscious of how we spend our money. I think it’s about time we also make a conscious choice to know where our clothing comes from.
As Emma Watson says:
“It’s not enough for me anymore that it’s a beautiful piece. I want to know who made it and where it came from.”
Did you know that globally about three quarters of all garment workers are female? Most of them are being paid less than a living wage, in unsafe work conditions. All of that so we could shop online for a bargain, take a picture for Instagram and never wear that top ever again.
Instead, how about we use our buying power to send a clear message to brands that we won’t settle for anything less than transparency and fairness for all people working in the industry? We also won’t purchase something just because it’s currently trendy, to be worn a couple of times and soon forgotten.
VIVAIA is a beautiful brand I recently discovered. In all disclosure, they offered to send me a pair of their kitten heels to try out. The moment I got them, I loved them. They’re actually comfortable and super duper adorable! I couldn’t believe they were made of 6 recycled bottles!
The brand was founded on a mission to create stylish and sustainable footwear that is eco-friendly and responsible. They’re looking to make a positive impact on the world, and for that reason, I wholeheartedly want to encourage them and share this discovery with you.
Check out their website and if you’re seriously not impressed, let me know. Feel free to use my code DANA for 10% off. You’re welcome! 🙂
I’ll try to share more brands I discover as I continue along my sustainable fashion discovery journey.
It’s about time we feel empowered in the choices we make every day. Our planet is counting on us.
