From Virginia to Paris: A Transatlantic Love Story

VIVAIA

Bethany's journey to Paris began in Virginia. While attending college, she worked as a cashier at a local car wash, where a charming French customer became a regular there, and they later went out for coffee together. Two years later, they married and moved to France together.

Her career blossomed unexpectedly. Recruited to teach communication skills at the Château de Versailles, she discovered a passion for coaching professionals. Her work took on an international dimension when she became president of a non-profit organization, which led her to travel frequently for conferences, including to the UK.

Empowering Minds: Teaching Beyond the Classroom

At Télécom Paris, Bethany helps trainees move past the fear of the big steps ahead with the right communication tools. Bethany's courses on conflict management and scientific communication are born from her belief that "uncertainty lies immense opportunity for growth and adaptation." Students learn to dissect communication styles, navigate unhealthy work enviroments, and manage stress and handle high-stakes situations with confidence by equipping them with both linguistic strategies and mind-body techniques.

Her approach? Treat every course like a prototype. "It all starts with an intensive analysis to fully understand expectations." She explains. Feedback loops are key: "After every session, I set aside time to gather feedback both from trainees and decision-makers to pinpoint what worked and what didn’t. " "If my students no longer need me, I’ve succeeded." This philosophy mirrors her own resilience, shaped by years of IVF and a breast cancer battle.

As for the way she balance her responsibilities as an educator, consultant, and trustee, she says she owes it to her theatre experiences as a child, her love of a vibrant stage, her love of observing every detail and her admiration of the team's dedication to it. She believes, "The underlying truth to balancing multiple identities is that, much like a successful theater production, we all need to work together, trust each other, and keep moving forward toward our collective goal."

Beyond Work: Trustee, Gardener, and Baker

As a trustee for IATEFL, her focus has been on guiding the association's future strategy while grappling with the financial realities of a long recovery period. Over the past five years, Bethany navigates tough financial decisions with empathy - often having to say no to dedicated volunteers. Fortunately, the most recent financial year shows the association is now moving in the right direction.

Beyond work, Bethany navigates motherhood and personal passions. Her favorite hobby is gardening now, she completely addicted to adding as much color as possible to my little garden. As a self-proclaimed "Baker" & "BBQ queen", she finds joy in braising beef, BBQ ribs and baking cupcakes - hobbies that earned nods of approval from her French husband. "I feel like I've truly conquered the final frontier of the kitchen when I get praise from some of the world's pickiest eaters!" She grins.

Becoming: A Mirror about her own journey

VIVAIA

Michelle Obama's Becoming became Bethany's companion during cancer treatments. "It taught me to approach life as a vast exploratory laboratory - observing others and how they navigate their challenges, while always finding peace with the direction our own lives can take." She says.

Bethany resonated with many of the ideas in the book and it has helped her greatly in both her family and professional life. Michelle's reflections on falling in love and learning to appreciate her husband's constant thirst for knowledge echo Bethany's own experience with her husband.

Michelle also shares insights into her upbringing, offering valuable lessons that she carried into adulthood. Meanwhile, Bethany's reflections on the cultural challenges she faced have made her more mindful and empathetic in her work with international students.

Finding Light in Color: A Parisian Awakening

For years, Bethany lived in head-to-toe Parisian black - especially in winter, when the city seemed to insist on it. After her serious illness, however, she began craving light wherever she could find it - and that light arrived in bold, joyful color. Little by little, she replaced her all-black wardrobe and shoes with vibrant block hues. The transformation proved profound: each bright piece lifted her spirits, reaffirmed her resilience, and demonstrated that even on the grayest days one can choose something different.

Bethany's journey inspires us all to step out from behind the clouds and embrace the color within our hearts. Her resilience, belief, and empowerment show that reinvention isn't about erasing the past, but about moving confidently into each new chapter. For Bethany, VIVAIA is more than just a brand - it's a trusted companion on her path of growth and self-discovery. With every step she takes, she's reminded that strength and style can walk side by side.
